Teatro Nacional São João (TNSJ) has announced the programming for the 2021/2022 season. A Shakespeare’s work, in its in-house production, “Lear” will mark the reunion with the spectators, in October.

São João National Theatre has announced its programming for the period between September and March of the 2021/2022 season. Under the motto “O Centenário acaba aqui” (“The Centenary ends here), São João proposes to recover part of the programme that the pandemic has postponed, through a series of initiatives that now find their time.

The new season brings nine world premieres, including two in-house productions, four international shows, one of them a national premiere, and 14 co-productions. The new programme brings with it the announcement of the reopening of the doors of TNSJ’s headquarters-building, scheduled for October. The reopening of the hundred-year-old building is part of a three-day programme featuring an international colloquium, an exhibition, the premiere of a new production and the launch of three volumes of the “Cadernos do Centenário” collection.

The reopening of the headquarters-building’s doors will be marked with the premiere of “Lear”, in its in-house production, on October 22nd. Nuno Cardoso, artistic director of TNSJ, will present one of Shakespeare's most acclaimed plays, written in the early 17th century. First performed in 1606, before the court of King James I of England, the play has since been revisited by the most renowned international theatres, now joining São João's in-house productions list.

TNSJ is being renovated, in a process whose main changes have to do with improving the safety conditions and access to the building, but the renovation works will also enable to upgrade the mechanics and architecture of the stage. The updating of the technical equipment is also included, in addition to strengthening the artistic programming, among other projects.
