It was the first hotel to bring luxury and five stars to the city of Porto and, after seven decades, it continues to do so. The guest book is full of photographs and messages from state figures, royal families, and even there are the signatures of singer Prince and Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama. In 2021, Hotel Infante Sagres celebrates 70 years of navigating the history and evolution of the city.

“The Hotel Infante Sagres is in a way Porto, in the sense that it expresses a serenity, a kind of certainty of who is where they should be and is what they should be”, wrote the Nobel Prize for Literature winner, José Saramago, when he stayed at the hotel in 1991.

The latest restoration and refurbishment of the hotel sought to recover the design by the architect from Porto, Rogério de Azevedo, who was also responsible for taking the modernist school in Porto to the garage building and the former building of Comércio do Porto newspaper, in 1930, and, five years later, to the old building of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP). And for that, one of his disciples, António Teixeira Lopes, was chosen.

Open since 1951, it was born from the vision of businessman and philanthropist Delfim Ferreira, one of the richest men in the country and who was also the owner of Serralves House. He brought to the hotel in Praça D. Filipa de Lencastre (after all its part of the family tree, but we will get to that later) the luxury of the best that Europe had had at the time. With all the pomp and circumstance, Infante Sagres was inaugurated with the symbolic cutting of a white and green ribbon, the colours of the city of Porto.

One can see there the decorative details in wrought iron and carved wood, the stuccoes by the masters António and Domingos Baganha, as well as the 500 panels that make up the stained-glass window by Ricardo Leone, artist also responsible for the hundred-year-old stained-glass window in one of the facades of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP).

The hotel's name arises in dedication to the son of D. João I (King John I) and... D. Filipa de Lencastre (Queen Philippa of Lancaster), Infante Dom Henrique (Prince Henry), born in Porto, and who took with him the nickname “O Navegador” (The Navigator) for having promoted the Portuguese discoveries and the first national explorations.
