The biggest party in the city is back and will be what it always was: a whole month of tradition and entertainment that spreads through all the streets of Porto. The programme of the São João Festivities has already been presented and includes everything from concerts to amusements, from cascatas [miniature townscapes] to rusgas. And, of course, the fireworks.
In 2022, Porto is preparing for a programme that “revives the memories that the people of Porto have” and “keeps the city’s traditions alive” and the importance of this return, “will be answered by the people of Porto”, says Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto.
Porto will have a programme of popular festivals spread over three spots of the city. Since Avenida dos Aliados is restricted by the works of Metro do Porto, and also to relieve the pressure that was felt there, on the longest night of the year there will not be a big concert in the city centre, but three popular festivals at different spots.
Praça do Rossio, in the Palácio do Cristal Gardens, is the first to bring music to the city with the Santos Noventeiros to the rhythm of Romana, Saúl and Marante. The dance starts at 8 pm on the 23rd and continues at 10 pm on Largo Amor de Perdição, in the Cordoaria area, with entertainment provided by Toy and José Malhoa. Starting at 11:30 pm, Chico da Tina performs at Casa da Música Square.
And everything follows the rhythm for the highlight of the evening: the fireworks. Since the lower deck of the Luiz I Bridge is undergoing works, the pyrotechnics show that lights up the sky that night will not be launched from the upper deck, but from special structures set on the Douro River.
Music can be heard in every thoroughfare
The seven parishes of the municipality also receive a special programme on the 17th, 18th, 19th and 23rd, featuring Quim Barreiros, Zé Amaro, Bandalusa and Diapasão. On June 24th, São João’s Day, Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa’s concert will take place at 6 pm at the concha acústica [acoustic shell] of the Palácio de Cristal Gardens.
Beyond the music, there is more tradition back in the city. On Saturday, the 18th, starting at 3 pm, eight folk groups participate in the Arruada de Ranchos do Porto (folk groups walking through the streets while playing and singing), which ends at Praça do General Humberto Delgado. It is also here that, on June 22nd and 23rd, will feature the installation “Flores de Manjerico”, an artistic creation by the Porto collective FAHR 021.3.
And a must of the festival is the traditional Cascata Comunitária de São João, created by Oficina Brâmica together with the people of Porto, and which will be on display at the Bolhão Temporary Market, from 21 June to 4 July.
The last point of the programme turns all attention to the Rusgas, the popular parades in Porto that count on the participation of various associations and collectives in the city. This year the parade leaves at 5 pm from Praça da Batalha and ends at Praça do General Humberto Delgado, where the winning rusga will receive a trophy by designer Madalena Martins.
